Philip D. Caine Eagle Squadron collection, 1939-1999.

This collection consists of two types of material, the first of which contains items from General Caine's various assignments at the United States Air Force Academy from 1970 through 1992 which took Caine from a Tenured Professor of History to the Deputy Commandant of Cadets for Military Instruction and the Commandant's first permanent professor. These items contain many Academy reports dealing with numerous aspects of cadet life, General Caine's military correspondence, briefings, and trip reports. There is also an enormous amount of printed matter and periodicals whose subject matter is concerned with both the Air Force, in general, and the Academy, specifically. The second part of the collection consists of volumes of information regarding the Royal Air Force (RAF) Eagle Squadron members and their exploits during World War II. Much of this information was used by General Caine in the writing of his books, "Eagles of the RAF," "American Pilots in the RAF," "Spitfires, Thunderbolts and Warm Beer," "Aircraft Down!," and "The RAF Eagle Squadrons." Included in these materials are personal interviews with Eagle Squadron members, questionnaires completed by Eagle Squadron members, official RAF files from the United Kingdom, and biographies which were compiled by Eagle Squadron members, their families, and General Caine.
